MES Engineering (Exeplant at present), one of the OMEGALLIANCE® Group companies, implemented an operational supervisory control system for line pipes and compressor equipment at the Nord Stream gas pipeline segment from Pikalevo to Vyborg in the Leningrad Oblast. This segment is operated by Gazprom's subsidiary, LLC Gazprom Transgaz Saint Petersburg. The project was a crucial step to create controls over main gas transportation in the region.
The implemented system provided tools for operational control over sites and processes at line gas pipes and at compressor shops. The designed solution controls operation modes and process equipment state, analyses collected data to optimize operation modes, monitors and prevents emergency situations, and keeps records of gas consumption for own needs. Along with that, the system monitors fire and gas contamination alarms and provides tools and data to control sites power supply and pollutant emissions into the atmosphere.
Following the works completed by MES Engineering (Exeplant at present), customers have acquired a system providing up-to-date, comprehensive and reliable information on processes taking place at the pipeline segment. Data collected at compressor shops are transferred to the Central Operational Supervisory Control Room.
"The system is to control equipment condition along the whole pipeline segment. Particularly, it concerns valves and compressors. The aim of the project is to provide control over the segment with high usability and detalization. This solution timely notifies the employees who are responsible for the segment of the current situation," Vladimir Demidov, MES Engineering (Exeplant at present) Project Manager says.
The deployed operational control system sends information to other information systems operating this segment. The simulation and calculation system receives real-time data from the supervisory control system and uses this data to predict further segment behavior. Particularly, it is possible to predict pressure distribution and gas piston passing through the pipeline run. On the basis of equipment data, Gazprom Transgaz Saint Petersburg also created an efficient environment monitoring system: plant information systems use this data to track and control emissions rate.
Additionally, the new system is engaged in personnel training through data transfer to the operator training simulator used for operating situations simulation and exercise on the basis of real data.
Implementation of state-of-art information technologies and innovative developments is a significant part of our work. The implemented system makes it possible to shorten alarm response time, increase safety and reliability of equipment operation, and, as a result, to provide trouble-free gas transportation.
The project was executed on the basis of the PSI Сontrol MES system by PSI AG (Germany). Five employees of MES Engineering (Exeplant at present) were engaged in the system development. Two of them participated on a periodic basis. The project took two years to complete.
The system is now in commercial operation and MES Engineering (Exeplant at present) is to provide solution support in the future.

About Nord Stream
Nord Stream is a main gas pipeline system running from Russia to Germany on the bottom of the Baltic Sea. The pipeline construction started in April 2010. In November 2011, gas supply via the first pipeline started, and the second pipeline was completed in April 2012. The total length of the pipeline is 1,244 km. The Nord Stream project is developed by an international consortium Nord Stream AG. The five shareholders of the Nord Stream consortium are Gazprom (51%), Wintershall Holding (a BASF subsidiary) and E.ON Ruhrgas—15.5% each, and Gasunie and GDF Suez—9% each.
